Re-Connect
An integrative study of palaeoecology and extinction of large mammals from MIS 3–1 in the Carpathian–Dniester region.
Context
The extinction of large mammals during Marine Isotopic Stage 3–1 (Late Pleistocene–Holocene) is a major topic of debate in international science.

Scientific Background
Faunal Crossroads
The Carpathian–Dniester region holds a key position on the migration routes of large mammals between Asia and Europe. Despite its importance, this area remains one of the least studied and connected parts of Europe.
Project Mission
Reconstructing Diets
Re-Connect aims to explore the paleodiet of large mammals from cave deposits in the Carpathian–Dniester region by combining stable isotope analyses (δ13C, δ15N), dental microwear studies, taphonomy, and morpho-osteometry.

Main Objectives
01
Paleodiet
To evaluate the paleodiet of mammal populations in the Carpathian-Dniester area, from cave deposits (Late Pleistocene‒Holocene).
02
Age
To establish the absolute age of the analyzed mammal populations and their extinction.
01
Dynamics
To integrate paleodietary proxies, radiocarbon ages, and paleoclimate data to investigate population dynamics and extinction causes.
Researchers
Project Team
Re-Connect unites experienced researchers from Romania and the Republic of Moldova, combining expertise in palaeoecology, geology, and biology. Working together, we integrate fieldwork and advanced analytical methods to explore past ecosystems.
